How RockTape Works
RockTape kinesiology tape is a type of elastic therapeutic tape designed to provide support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting motion. RockTape is commonly used by athletes, both professional and recreational, to aid in injury prevention, reduce pain, and improve performance. Here's how it works and how to apply it...
How to Apply Rocktape
How It Works
RockTape, like other kinesiology tapes, works by leveraging the principles of biomechanics and neurophysiology to provide support and promote optimal movement and function of the musculoskeletal system. Kinesiology tape was first used by acupuncturists and chiropractors in Japan, today kinesiology tape is used by a wide variety of health professionals throughout the world to both prevent and treat injuries and pain. Its effectiveness is based on several key mechanisms.
-
Mechanical Support: RockTape's elastic properties allow it to stretch and contract in a way that is similar to the natural elasticity of muscles and skin. When applied correctly, it can provide external support to muscles and joints. This support can help distribute forces more evenly, reduce strain on injured or fatigued tissues, and provide stability during movement without limiting range of motion.
-
Pain Modulation: The tape's gentle, continuous pull on the skin can stimulate sensory receptors known as mechanoreceptors. These receptors send signals to the brain, which can override or modulate pain signals. Essentially, the sensation of the tape on the skin may distract the brain from perceiving pain, offering relief to some individuals.
-
Lymphatic Drainage: The wave-like pattern in which kinesiology tape is often applied can help facilitate lymphatic drainage. By slightly lifting the skin's surface, it creates micro-spaces that encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid. This can assist in reducing swelling and inflammation in the affected area, which can be especially beneficial for athletes recovering from injuries.
-
Postural Awareness: RockTape can be used to improve awareness of body posture and movement patterns. When applied strategically, it can provide tactile feedback to individuals, reminding them to maintain proper posture and alignment during activities, which may reduce the risk of injury or discomfort caused by poor posture.
-
Neurological Input: The sensory input provided by RockTape can enhance neuromuscular coordination and proprioception (awareness of body position in space). This heightened awareness can help athletes and individuals make more precise movements, improving their overall performance and reducing the risk of injury.
How Does RockTape Work?
When applied correctly, RockTape’s unique elasticity causes the skin to form convolutions and wrinkle. This decompresses the tissue immediately below the skin. It is believed that this has three main effects:
- Fluid effect- improving blood and lymphatic flow in the taped area
- Mechanical effect- improving the slide and glide between tissue layers
- Neurological effect- altering the perception of pain and improving body awareness.
